Throttle Cable Adjustment
This is a modification that I learned about on the SE-R mailing list. One of the mailers (I do not remember who) posted a couple of times about the improvement in throttle response that he got by eliminating the excessive slack from the throttle cable. I thought this was hyperbole until I tried it. WOW. This modification has significantly improved throttle response on my car. I highly recommend it. Here is how to do it.
When I
checked the throttle cable I did notice that there was an excessive amount of slack. In
the
picture to the right I was able to press with my finger on the cable and move it down
about a 1/4 inch without even moving the throttle
drum that the cable is attached to. To the right is the picture of the cable after I
removed the slack from it. As you can see there is only a slight amount of slack in the
cable. You must make sure not to tighten the cable too much, otherwise it will move the
throttle drum and this will interfere with your idle speed. You must make it taut but not
tight. Here is the procedure as outlined in the Factory Service Manual:
Make sure the automatic speed control wire (cruise control wire) is not pulling the throttle drum. |
|
Loosen lock nut, then tighten adjusting nut until throttle drum starts to move. |
|
From that position, turn back adjusting nut 1.5 to 2 turns, then tighten lock nut (Do not turn back the adjusting nut to FSM specification. Turn it less than 1.5 turn. If you do it according to FSM specs you will still have a lot of slack). |
Enjoy the modification.
